German police shoot man waving axe in “threatening manner”

BERLIN – Police on Sunday shot and wounded a man armed with an axe and a firebomb in the northern German city of Hamburg.

The man, with the axe in his hand, waved it at police officers in a “threatening manner” in the city’s St Pauli district, according to a police spokesman.

Police officers opened fire and hit the man in the leg. The man is now receiving medical treatment, the spokesman said.

The incident occurred ahead of Sunday’s football match between the Netherlands and Poland in Hamburg, one of the German cities hosting Euro 2024 matches.
