6 killed in bus accident in Syria

DAMASCUS — Six people were killed and several others injured on Friday in a traffic accident in Syria’s northwestern province of Latakia, according to the state news agency SANA.

A bus carrying 29 passengers hit bridge pillars near the Jableh city while traveling from the northern province of Aleppo towards Latakia, SANA said.

Rescuers and fire department personnel were quickly sent to the scene to free trapped passengers from the wreckage and transport them to nearby hospitals for treatment, the traffic police said, adding that two of the injured needed immediate surgery.

According to a traffic police report, the driver’s distraction and negligence were the primary causes of the accident.
