ACCRA — Three people remained missing as a search and rescue operation continued for their rescue, days after a boat capsized in eastern Ghana’s Oti Region, an official said on Thursday.
Edward Kumah, the Oti regional director of the National Disaster Management Organization, told Xinhua that the boat carrying 10 people from Njare, an island community, encountered severe storms, resulting in the disaster late Tuesday.
Kumah said the boat was on its way to Dambai, the capital of the region, for a funeral when the disaster happened.
“There were 10 passengers on the service. Seven of them were rescued, but three have remained missing,” he said, adding that the search and rescue operation was still underway.
The missing included a pregnant woman and a boy, and of those rescued, six were treated and discharged from the local clinic, and one remained on admission, said Kumah.
According to Kumah, the main challenge in the area was the lack of life jackets in the boats, exposing marine travelers to danger during disasters.
