10 killed, 24 seriously injured in vehicle collision in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG — At least ten people died while 24 were left seriously injured in a collision involving a truck and a minibus taxi early Monday morning in Mpumalanga, a province in eastern South Africa.

Mpumalanga Community Safety Department Spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said eight people who died were occupants of the minibus taxi, while two who perished were from the truck. Those who sustained injuries were admitted to nearby hospitals.

The accident occurred on the R42 road near Delmas in Mpumalanga as the minibus taxi was traveling toward Emalahleni in the province, while the truck was heading to Bronkhorstspruit in Gauteng Province.

“It is not known at this stage what caused the crash. The investigation is underway,” said the spokesperson.

According to him, there is no indication that the death toll will rise.
